UFC lightweight Jake Matthews demonstrates how to use a kick to set up strikes.

Aussie UFC Lightweight Jake Matthews returns for this week’s Technique of the Week, this time with the help of his father and head coach of XLR8 training centre, Mick Matthews.

In one of Jake’s final techniques before he competes at UFC 193, “The Celtic Kid” shows off an effective 6-hit striking combo, consisting of punches and a single kick. The key to being successful with this series of strikes is to alternate between power shots and setup shots, and using a leg kick to surprise your opponent with more strikes. In the video above, Jake breaks down the method, the benefits, and why he likes to use this combination in his fights.

Jake is a UFC lightweight with four submission victories to his name (two in the UFC), and is currently scheduled to headline the UFC 193 prelims against Akbarh Arreola in November. The 21-year-old is looking to bounce back from the first ever professional loss of his career. Jake was submitted via guillotine choke back in May, by heavy underdog James Vick, at UFC Fight Night: Miocic vs. Hunt.
