UFC president Dana white and CEO/Chairman Lorenzo Fertitta hold a press conference to address the performance enhancing drug problem currently in Mixed Martial Arts, the recent failed tests by fighters such as Jon Jones (cocaine), Anderson Silva (steroids), Nick Diaz (marijuana), and Hector Lombard (steroids), as well as what the future holds for dealing with the issue and such situations.
Dana and Lorenzo reveal that harsher penalties will be enforced for any future (July 2nd) fighters who fail tests. First time offenders could face 2 and even 4 year bans from MMA competition. This is a significantly increased time for a fighter to sit out, and in the case of a 4 year ban, would mean four times the length in comparison to the current 9, 12, and 24 month bans being handed out.
Will the harsher penalties help deter fighters from using performance enhancing drugs? Only time will tell.
